Supporting Home Education

We recognise that learning takes many forms, and we are delighted to welcome home educators to our Museum. If you’d like to organise workshops or activities as a group of home educators, then please contact us using the form at the bottom on the page

Home educating families are welcome to visit at any time, and we have a range of activity sheets available for you to use as you explore the museum. Some of these are available above to download at home before your visit from our Resources page.

Heritage Creatives

Home Education sessions for ages 12+

Explore the museum and be inspired by its collections to create art, learn about history and about being a Curator.

Next Session:

Monday 22nd July – 10:30am-12:30pm

Topic: Clay

Take inspiration from ‘Motto Ware’ – pottery such as plates or jugs decorated with inspirational or humorous text, often written in a Devon dialect, and thus known as Devon motto ware.

Topic: Explore the history of the town through the Town Trail

Meet at the museum for 10:30am, ready to leave at 10:45am. 

Comfortable (and waterproof shoes recommended!), and don’t forget a coat (weather depending).

There will also be a chance to look around our two summer exhibitions before or after the trail!

Monday 23rd September – 10:30am-12:30pm

Topic: Maps

You will have a chance to look at maps from the museum collection, as well as taking inspiration from a large variety of maps, before exploring the map making process and making your own maps.

But these will not be the sort of maps we might use to get around – how about a map of your holiday, or a map of your heart’s desires, or even a map of mythological places or a map or your imagination? This will be a great chance to be super creative and have lots of fun!

Home Ed Art Club at the Museum

These sessions are open to any age but mainly it’s 5-11 year olds.

Brick Ideas – workshops using Lego

We also collaborate with Brick Ideas to run workshops specifically for home educators.

Taking inspiration from the museum collection you will have the opportunity to create wonderful contraptions from Lego.

Brick Ideas can help home schools groups by providing design and technology workshop which can link to any topic.

Please note that the children will be working in group of 2-3 during these workshops.

Next workshop:

25th July, 9:30am-12:00noon –  Things that go Whizzzzzz

Bring your ideas and we’ll make them happen, cars, trains, planes. Using Lego motors we’ll build your choice of whizzing thing.

This session is suitable for ages 6+ and children must be accompanied by an adult.
