Carving the missing parts of the overmantle
Laurence Beckford master wood-carver re-carved the missing elements of the Sandford Orleigh carvings, as part of the restoration process for the Heart of Oak conservation project. Laurence modelled the console figures (nick named the goat man and lady as they both have hooves) in clay first to get as close as possible to the original carvings; he only had a fuzzy, distant black and white image to work with which had been taken at angle in the 1970s-skilled indeed!
Here we see a panel with its side edge re-carved.
One of the consoles was missing and had to be re-carved.
The female figure worked in clay prior to the carving.
Laurence has his own website where you can see the work that he has been involved with over the years.
