I have spent the last week on work experience here at the museum and have enjoyed every minute of it. Everyday has been different and a great opportunity to learn new skills. Over the past week I have had the amazing opportunity to go behind the scenes and explore the stores and look through so many cool and interesting objects and photos. From this I then got to choose the object of the month and photo all photos for July. Both of these activities allowed me to learn new and interesting things about the town I wouldn’t have found out otherwise.

After living in the town for years I went up the clock tower for the first time. With the help of some the amazing volunteers that help with so many jobs around the museum, I learnt so many facts about the clocktower I never knew before such as the rebuilding and reopening of the tower in 1973. One of my favourite things I helped out with was looking through the handling collection before selecting a few for a table that was set up for a local residential home to come and explore.

It was really interesting hearing their memories of some of the objects and learning how they were used in day-to-day life. I was amazed to find out how much the community is involved with the museum and all about the amazing work that goes on behind the scenes. Overall, it has been an amazing week full of interesting facts about conservation and pest control to fun surprises like fancy dress aliens and hidden details in the museum. I loved helping out with such a kind and welcoming team who allowed me to do so many interesting activities and see all the things that go not running a museum.
